The cache settings are used for beans that have an identity such as Stateful session beans. The pool settings are used for beans that currently don't have an identity such as stateless session beans and message driven beans. Entity beans are a little bit more complicated as they have a cache of beans with identity and a pool of beans without identity but I haven't looked at the specifics for this recently.
