I have a pair of JBOSS 3.2.5 / Solaris 9 servers in a cluster.

The client fails over to the second instance very quickly if one server is
stopped. However, if I power down one server, it takes several minutes to fail
over to the other server.

I bring up the server without starting the jboss instance and it fails over
quickly again.

It seems to wait really long if a IP is unreachable but not the IP address is
reachable but the instance is not.

I appear to be missing something very fundamental ?
