I have tested on MySQL 4 + 5, and all seems to be good. I tested MS SQL before the 2.2.1RC1 launch and it worked as well. The ejb3 error you are seeing does not appear to be related to portal, so you may want to do as conkan says regarding JDK1.4_x.
