Thank you for your comments! In general, integrating different software components together to end up with a working web application is no trival task. Their are many different paths which can be taken! I will consider your suggestions when I review the user manual...

No disrespect intended, indeed I can appreciate the direction into which dbForms is going.
My background:
C++,
Visual *oxPro (sad),
new to Java,
very good at integration issues,
good at data design to a problem,
bloody minded (extremely persistent and stubborn = + & -)
Motivation:
Produce stable WWW data application for media industry
Current toolset either is unstable or fails QA testing
Commit only to open, with source, stable tools
Personal desire to rid myself of M$ quality issues
Installation:
dbForms can become unstable due to conflicts in XML parser/readers. Pool managers and the Gui interface can also demand an XML parser which can then cause dbForms-config.xml to fail to be read.
I understand that the whole area of connection pooling is outside of dbForms remit but it can have a serious detrimental impact. As far as I understand it JDBC 2.0 has its own pooling standards and this whole area is subject to radical change. It would appear that connection pool drivers are specific to the JSP server you are using due to the loading interface. This is going to be a problematic area to test in production quality code.
Completeness:
Direct re-edit of the Gui generated JSP is probably preferred by most post entry level developers but the HomeSite-Plugin from http://www.dbforms.org/allairehomesite.html would have been useful.
I know that I would be willing to pay for such a utility.
Documentation could be more explicit about 'trial' configuration version levels of software. I know that TomCat 4.0.3 caused me trouble.
Overall conclusion:
dbForms is being actively developed and offers radical productivity improvements. The first time experience could be improved by a strong statement regarding the recommended version levels of software.
XML reader classes appear to be going through a rapid industry change which may break the software.
dbForms is worth persisting with.
No offence intended and these are my personal opinions. The first timer experience is rarely expressed and can never be recaptured by an experienced user.
