I use gnumake and use the following technique to get to my class file
subst(.,/,$(PACKAGE)
This was about all the change that i needed to migrate from my c makefiles
to java.

The answer is yes. I use make and know of no extensions specifically for
Java. Additionally as far as I know make has not changed much since 1993
