there is one feature in emacs i miss, which i found in the Alpha editor:
when typing a variable name, hitting control-tab tried to complete the
name by using previously defined variables, methods, build-in names ...
does anybody know how to achieve this or where to find the appropriate
lisp packages?

I believe you can get emacs to do the same by using the function "hippie-expand".
Just bind it to some key combination of your preference, and it will expand expressions
based on god knows what in your open buffers, dirs, and things. It's very useful.
You can also scroll among the possible expansions by just repeatedly pressing
the key combination (i.e., calling hippie-expand several times).
It resides in the hippie-exp.el library, which I believe is included with the standard emacs
distributions (at least v 20.3++).
There might be other ways to get emacs to do this as well, but this works fine for me.
