byte-compiling JDE?

I just downloaded and installed JDE 2.1.5.  It doesn't appear that its
source files are byte-compiled, and when I tried byte-compiling them I
had problems.

Does byte-compiling the JDE source have any significant effects?

(I'm not on the list so please CC any responses to me.)
