One of the problems I've run into with respect to this is errors in the
.emacs files the occur prior to your code that prevent its proper execution.
One way to debug this is to load the .emacs file into a buffer, and execute
it in place (M-x eval-current-buffer)  This will show any errors in the lisp
that exist.  Also, JDE can save these settings as they are set through the
JDE->Option menu by selecting [State] and saving for future session.
