This usually is a sign that you have not set jde-bug-jpda-directory.
I've fixed the JDE to display a more meaningful message when this happens.
The fix will be in the next release beta15, which will also include a new
"watch field" command plus commands for attaching to running vm's. The
release should be available by the weekend.
