emacs20.4.1

I have the .java file extension mapped so that if I double click on
on a .java file, emacs is invoked. I do this a lot. Startup time is a
little sticky,
around 7 seconds (admittedly I don't have the fastest machine).
Not so terrible, but I thought, what the hell, why not try to speed it
up. So, I changed my .emacs file to .emacs.el and then byte-compiled
it, hoping for a load time improvement. There was none. I'm guessing
that loading and intitializing the jde stuff is where most of the time
is
spent -- (I really don't have much in my .emacs other than jde stuff).

Anyway, I'd wait twice that long to use jde, but I thought it might be
worth it to ask if there were something I could do. For example, none of

my jde lisp source is compiled. If I were to compile that, would it
help?
Are there other things I could do?

Thanks.
