Indent size

I'm probably missing something so basic it must be right in front of me,
but how do you set the indent size?

I read an FAQ which gives some convoluted code to install a style on the
mode hook. I copied and pasted that to the end of my .emacs, but it has
no effect.
Indent size is still 4.
