Could you explain these steps in a little bit more detail. I have the exact same problem, but I'm not sure what you man by 'unbinding' and 'reevaluating' the symbol.

This caused a problem when I first ran the debugger.
I loaded my source file, went to project-options-general then to the
jde-db-debugger variable which displayed the customization lisp
instead of the customization "panel".
I fixed it by unbinding the jde-db-debugger symbol and re-evaluating
it.
It now seems to work ok.
Thought you should know.
Also the directory stuff works great! Paperclips can now read and
write files in it's startup dir!
