Thanks for all of your feedback and hard work on this.  I was using XEmacs 
but gave up a couple of weeks ago based on your feedback, but didn't 
remember that I could go back to javaw with NT Emacs.  I'll give that a 
try.  Your idea on the jdk path is definitely better than mine.

Your message on the JDK updating the registry on windows is new info.  The 
problem I have on my machine is that I have a 1.1 and 1.2 JDK installed, 
plus a 1.1 based Cafe, an early 1.2 based Visual Age, and a 1.2 based 
JBuilder.  Path management is a hassle at best so I try to hardcode paths 
when possible.  Haven't had too many problems with my JDKs conflicting, but 
come to think of it I haven't tried to change back to JDK 1.1 in a while.
