It would be significantly harder for other languages. The JDE (and I
believe most other Java IDE's) take advantage of the fact that the Java
classpath contains all the information needed to complete methods and
fields, in other words, the completion database for the JDE is the
classpath. To provide completion for other languages would require
developing the code to build the completion database, a significant
undertaking.

The semantic bovinator already provides functions for doing this. The JDE
gets the token list for the current buffer from the bovinator, reformats
it, and feeds it to the imenu package for display in the Emacs menubar. The
speedbar similarly obtains the Java token list from the bovinator and
formats it for display in the speedbar.
