I don't know what the situation is with Debian and Kaffe/SableVM, but here's a recent development from the Fedora world. Fedora Core 3 now ships the following packages: java-1.4.2-gcj-compat java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-devel See http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/release-notes/fc3/x86/ I think these provide a fake tools.jar file, as well as /usr/bin/java and /usr/bin/javac.
