I don't think it's a client-side configuration issue. If you forward port 80 on the firewall to port 5222 on your Jabber server (as well as the obvious port 5222 forwarding to port 5222 on your Jabber server), then people can connect to port 80 on your firewall (i.e., your Internet-visible "server") and talk to your Jabber server.
