I do also think this is the way it should be done. If jabber server know how to route xml messages they should be able to find the best route for the outband connections too. And this doesn't need to be the same. Several servers may be configured to direct clients to some globaly accessible HUB, or may suggest direct link between the clients. This way jabber could be integrated with ISP's routing adn firewall infrastructure and the clients would not have to guess any strange configs of the network.
