Richard's right, this problem arises due to Flash's imposition of a null terminator following write operations by the XMLSocket object. It's not a bug, it's a 'feature' of the Flash player.
FWIW I hope that Flash support is adapted to J2 earlier than later. Until then your best option is 1.4.2.
