The disadvantages of this method are that:
1) People can cheat and so influence the ranking.
2) It will make it more difficult for new innovative Jabber clients to
become visible. Also when a project is abandoned, it will stay at a higher
ranking for some time (cfr. Gabber) than new projects that are very
innovative. In
conclusion: it will be bad for innovation in Jabber clients world as only
the oldest projects are subsidized with this kind of free promotion. (In
contrast, the list should (IMO) be focussed on subsidizing the technically
best, the most standards compliant, the most focussed on the Jabber
protocol, the most stable, the most multiplatform, the most
internationalized,... 
Jabber clients.)
