It seems to me that for this kind of project it would make sense to base your protocol on the Atom Publishing Protocol. That gives you a pretty well-supported representation for your pages, and as Heiner said it would be pretty easy to imitate the HTTP requests in XMPP. It would be interesting to see what aspects of AtomPub could be done differently when XMPP is being used instead of HTTP.
