I'v seen something similar, but it was due to a 
mismatch on the iPlanet container, service pack level,

and JVM.

What iPlanet are you running?  Is this the webserver
or appserver?  What service pack level?  What JVM?  
Try taking a look at the service patches matching.
As an immediate workaround, I found changing the 
JVM settings for Hotspot ( if on ) or turning off the
JIT was a temporary workaround.  Just ideas to try...
