Well, I am a Certified Java 2 Programmer, there are plenty of jobs ads I've
seen which specify certification. I've never seen any *type* of
certification mentioned. You will get an argument from some people whether
the Cert. really measures anything, or guarantees a certain level of skill,
which is a valid argument. However in my experience the cert is just to act
as a candidate filter; it's like asking for *degree qualified* candidates.
It's not always necessary that the job needs a degree; it's just a way to
restrict the candidate list; I will note, I am degree-qualified but my
degree is in the Humanities, it's never been an issue for me to have a
Comp-Sci degree (although actually, I have an Naval Electrical Engineering
diploma, which was my first qualification + job).

I will note there where a few finer (obscurer) points about the API that I
learnt whilst studying for the Certification that otherwise I probably would
not have found out about until I encountered some real-world bug involving
them.

Last; the order. Do the Programmer's exam first. Then you can branch to
either the Developer's or Web Component Developer's exam. The Architects
exam doesn't have any prerequisites, but I'd still do the Programmer's exam
first anyway. I am going to do the Developer's exam next. I think this is
all on Sun's web site. I used to have a booklet on it that I got from Sun.

Also, I think IBM at least offer certification exams that allegedly cover
some or all of the Sun content as well as IBM specific stuff if you are
working in that environment.
