Why did you want the file size in the first place?  If it was meant to "warn" the 
downloader for very large files, you could use a JSP to examine the files on the 
server and present a massaged directory listing with dates and sizes...

In addition to the Content-Length coming with the reply header (which I've often seen 
in keep alive sessions to signal the client they can issue another request after 
reading that number of bytes off the socket), there are also situations where chunked 
encoding can be used to send data to the client without necessarily knowing how much 
will be sent ahead of time, but allowing the client to begin acting on what it has 
received.

Depending on the interface you are using with your server (URL Class or lower Socket 
Classes) some of this level of detail may be hidden from you.
