TopLink is indeed a mature product. Tomm commented that it's free; it's 
freely downloadable for development use, but I don't think you can freely 
use it in a production environment. It's part of Oracle's application 
server and you've got to pay for that.

I've been playing around quite a bit with Java Data Objects lately, which 
is the Java standard persistence API. It's not a specification for 
object-relational mapping per se in that it only specifies the Java side, 
but as a practical matter any implementation for a relational database 
implies object-relational mapping. It's not as mature or as powerful as 
TopLink, but I think it's much easier to use and provides persistence much 
more transparently.
