What are you using to generate the PDF? I assume you are talking about a Unix environment here?
We use xvfb (virtual frame buffer for X11) to generate gifs and jpegs on our servers but we haven't use it for PDFs yet but it should work. You should be able to update whatever display you are drawing the PDF to at will... we do it with the gifs and jpegs. Need more info please... Greg.
