At least that situation forces the student to well-prepare his program or spreadsheet in mind (or on paper) and not hoping for the compiler/debugger to do the
job in endless computer coding and testing sessions.
(BTW: at high school we mainly had access to Commodore C 64 systems - with nearly the same processor as the Apple-2 - for about 45 minutes per week.
And what did we make out of it ?
90 % of the pupils used the machines for games.
Even the 2 Intel 8086 CP/M business "PCs" with their professional Pascal compiler and black/white monitor (8000 to 10000 Dollar worth each) mainly were
used to play "Quix" !

to Jeff:
How did you cope with all those different liquids during Chemical education within your Physics studies or with those milligrams of radioactive gases
during practical studies ;-) ?

:-) . When I was in high school , at the southwest of China , a rare opportunity is that use a Apple-2 for 20 minutes in 2 weeks.

When I was in high school, China, I had a rare opportunity to visit a nearby university...computer room. I saw a lot of people working on paper tapes, with glue bottles and so on.

I decided to stay away from computer and chose physics when I entered college...because I did not want to live with glues...
