I am also a newbie in XML technology. So, I think I couldn't give you any good
comments. Hope the following articles could help, if you didnt read it before.

Subject: [jdjlist] XML databases

This isn't totally java-related but it may be in a way and this one's
the only discussion list I currently read :-)
My friend and I are starting a personal project where we're going to
store clinical/medical info and, following
the current trend, XML is playing an important role and Java will be the
main development language.
The question is about data storage. We are shuffling several options,
among which are XML databases.
That is, databases that natively take in, store, and spit out XML
documents and you can do queries on
tag names, tag contents, etc.

(Another option would be classical relational DBMS with rigid tables
from which we could extract some
XML anyway, but we want something more flexible give the fact that our
document definition may be
very different, changing and growing overtime with new types of data
added by the doctors, etc)

Ok, what have you people experienced in this area of XML databases?
 Searching the web I've found
either the hyper-multi-thousand-dollar solutions, or a lot of little
open source projects at various stages
of alphaness and betaness. The other day I found Xindice by the Apache
group, which is written in
Java and has a Java API of course and uses XPath to do queries.. it
looks promising, anyone has used it?
What about speed? Are indexed XML databases as fast as more
traditional DBs?
What's the state of technology in this area? It looks really hot and
all that.
I must add I'm new to XML and still trying to make some sense out of all
those Xthis and Xthat specifications
that are appearing everyday. I'm having nightmares with X-lettered
acronyms!!!

AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

I thank any comments :-)
