Thanks, I should have mentioned that I have to use a free or very cheap
solution.  That's why I have been looking at POI from Apache.  I don't
see a means for selecting across multiple spreadheets though. Thanks.

Try Formula 1. Expensive, but does everything you can think of in Java.
Also, Apache (I think) has got a free limited version of this
functionality.
