COBOL is still very much in use, as well as CICS and IDMS. Mainly, they are
used as downstream business logic for most financial institutions that used
Mainframes as their main processors for many years. In my case, I work on a
team composed of COBOL, CICS, and JAVA programmers, we implement front end
business applications in JAVA/JSP, and use the still powerful Mainframes for
batch computing. Our interface is through a YPS sockets connection, although
we are considering implementing an EJB for this purpose, still the upgrade
may not outweigh the cost of the project.
