Hi list,

This email is divided up into 2 sections :-
1) Some talk about Cobol
2) Talk about the IT job market and the idea that it is a "buyers market".

This email is for people who are interested in these topics.

================================================================
I asked in a previous email, whether someone "still uses Cobol" ? The
original guy that I communicated with said that no he was actually going to
stop using Cobol and move over to using Java. But then I got 2 more emails
from people who said that "Cobol is still in heavy use".

In the city that I live in, in Australia -- I have seen only 2 job
advertisements come up for people with Cobol skills in the last few weeks.

But I have done now a search for jobs advertised for people with Cobol --
and I found 51 jobs advertised. Ok this is Australia wide and is not limited
to one particular city.

Compared with Java where there were 267 jobs over the same time period.

For C there were 181 jobs advertised.

And for C++ there were 214 jobs advertised.

So based on this analysis, we can see that Cobol is not in as much demand as
the other programming languages mentioned.

But some people have communicated that Cobol is still a very important
language.

In Australia, I know of 4 universities that have subjects taught in Cobol

The following graph seems to show well where programming languages are
placed in Australia..

I am still looking for documentation that describes what I was talking about
earlier -- about the IT job market being a "buyers market". I still haven't
been able to find anything documented about that. We did however have a
discussion on this list about this subject -- and it was interesting.

Just thought I'd mention these things on the list.
