Maybe - but you better make sure that you've covered a few basics lie control structures, the main method, and etc. before getting them into the Swing of things (pun intended). I can think of "fun" ways to learn basics w/o Swing or AWT being involved. What you consider fun may simply be confusing to the uninitiated, whom lose the trees because of the forest.
