Here is one of the products that interface with JDBC driver to catch distributed transactions and update cache which (from the description) sits on multiple distributed server machines.  I don't know how well it works, but the diagrams are lively.

Correct. The MultiCacheManager (as it is called) also allows the user to remove items from the cache of any of the machines.  For a distributed cache would it work to have a separate cache machine or a disk cache on a shared drive?
