You're just seeking
to understand it, but you still have to build it and deliver it. And none of you
ever done J2EE before...

I would start with
trying to understand (and run!) some examples included with an app server
like JRun or Weblogic. And I would strongly suggest to hire a J2EE architect or two,
otherwise you're courting a disaster down the line. Never mind the $$$$, I am
guessing that an architect would have already paid for him or herself,
right?
