These look good to me (but I'm the guy who came up with the hairbrained scheme ;-)).
Keep in mind that the D-Bus version really is intended to be the default. The mechanism to make the CORBA version the default is kind of a semi-graceful, but semi-ugly hack. I raised it for discussion on the GNOME desktop-devel list, however, and it didn't seem to raise any objections.
