Mark Waite closed JENKINS-17413 as Cannot Reproduce Unhelpful exception caused by a NullPointerException while attempting to use a git refspec -- javax.servlet.ServletException: java.lang.RuntimeException: Failed to instantiate class hudson.plugins.git.GitSCM Unfortunately, I don't think the exception you were seeing is related to the refspec. I'm not sure what causes those types of JSON conversion errors, but the cases I've detected have seem to be related to jobs defined with git-plugin 1.x versions that are now being edited with git-plugin 2.x.
