It could be a problem in p4java, or it could be a problem in how the p4 plugin is using p4java. The p4java API user's guide suggests that some aspects of handling symlinks are limited by the JDK, and have to be handled by the code that is calling p4java. I don't currently have the skills to investigate this much further.
