I looked into this some more. The problem is CmdRunner.release() doesn't explicitly throw an IOException, so trying to add a catch doesn't make sense as it wont compile. What I can possibly do is perhaps catch a generic Exception when the APISession is terminated. Perhaps that might help, especially during polling.
