Installed 1.52 in a fresh 1.596.2 installation. Configured a job with Mercurial SCM. Configured various repository browsers, saved, inspected config.xml, reconfigured the job. No problems.
Maybe check if your browser is failing to post correct form contents. The next step would be a Java debugger.
