Probably the best approach is to use LTS, but wait a few weeks - just to check if there are any bugs discovered (you can check community ratings in changelog <http://jenkins-ci.org/changelog-stable>). Also backup before update, and after update check if most crucial functions are stable (do some test builds). You can always revert to previous version if that won't work.

It works for us quite well :-).

...maybe one thing is not "working". Looking at issues list it's hard to figure out if certain bug was fixed in LTS or not. It's even harder to figure out if LTS version is affected by certain bugs or not.
