I looked at the idea of switching to a mechanical fan
last year when I had my radiator re-cored. I don't
think there is enough room to install a big fan
because the steering rack is in the way. You would
need a 16" or bigger fan. On my car, a 74 there just
isn't enough room for more than maybe a 10" fan. I had
a five tube 15 fins/inch core installed as recommended
and would not take the same route again. The radiator
helped a little, but not enough and we didn't have our
usual hot summer here in NC last year. I would get a
custom built aluminum radiator if doing it again. I
found a Bosch 2 speed fan at Carlisle last year, it
has six blades and moves more air than a 4 blade, also
draws 3-4 amps more current. It fits on the right
side, very close to the alternator belt and will not
fit the left side because the power steering pump is
in the way. You may want to check Howard Stewat
Components on cooling system information
at http://www.stewartcomponents.com/, they have a very
informative question and answer section. They provide
water pumps to most Winston Cup race teams. I realize
I didn't answer your questions, I also would be
willing to go the mechanical fan route if I could find
room to install one big enough to do the job.
