Certainly check and reaffirm all connections to battery and solenoid/starter
are competent. Normally, if the latter are tight, they are fine. However,
battery connections can deliver mixed messages and commonly do, whether the
motor is hot or cold. It is assumed the experiences that you have reported
have a common reference...cold engine. If hot, then the probability that
the starter might be implicated increases. Given a common datum, the
sometimes sluggish behavior you report certainly signals variable battery
terminal contact impedance and a good wire brushing of the contact area
should clear up the symptoms. In order to exclude O2 in this area and
consequential corrosion in the future, a liberal coating of petroleum jelly
in the post/clamp contact area prior to tightening the clamps should be
applied. If the troubles persist, then at least, some of the possibilities
gave been ruled out.
