IMHO, inspection pits are *dangerous*.

Apart from the obvious risk of falling down them, there is a serious risk of
them becoming filled with petrol fumes (petrol fumes being denser than air),
particularly if the car is parked over the pit for days at a time -- and one
spark means goodbye.

Much safer would be one of those floor mounted mobile vehicle lifts, which
lift the car up to a height of about 1 metre. They cost in the range 1000 -
1500, probably less than the cost of installing a pit - and you can take
them with you when you move house.

If you budget will stretch to it and you garage is wide and high enough - a
two or 4 post workshop lift is even better. They can be bought new for
around 2000 and secondhand for half that. Plus you get the benefit of
parking your cars in 2 tiers.

Subject: Non Jensen - Mech Mate Motor Pit (UK)

Hi folks,

I'm thinking of buying a fibre glass inspection pit from a company called
Mech Mate - I guess this is a long shot but does anyone have one? See
http://www.mech-mate.com/
The water course is only about 3 feet below ground where I live - I want an
inspection pit not a pond, so this seems ideal.

Thanks,

Zac Marshall

PS if anyone in the UK is thinking of building a garage I have metal roof
supports and a 7 foot garage door going free. I also have a few unbroken
concrete sections left but I will be taking my frustrations out on them
tonight.
