Since Java uses the native platform's scrolling text widget, and such
things often do have limits of their own, yes, there are limits. I
think for Macintoshen, for example, the limit is 32K of text, or a
scroll buffer 32K pixels high, whichever comes first. I don't know
about limits on Win32, but I'm sure there are such limits.
You could add a button to the console (maybe I should do this) which
clears the text area. I could include this in the next release, I
suppose.
