Here one point of view...

I am currently using VJ++ 6.0 and JESS without a hitch.  Of course you 
need to use some of the core Java classes like Beans to use objects in 
your working memory, but I have not run into any problems that I did not 
experience in jdk1.1.6.  You will get deprecated warnings.
