Hello all,

This may be a bit of a dumb question, since I'm new to the field, but I'm
wondering if Jess is suitable for constraint based problem solving? After
searching the list I haven't found this mentioned much.

In my company we are trying to optimize certain logistics operations. We
have a thousands of shipments and we would like to find ones that are
compatible to be shipped together. There are a whole set of rules about what
is compatible and what is not - from simple rules like the kind of transport
being used and meeting required delivery dates to complex things like the
total weight and volume of goods must not exceed certain amounts, the total
round trip path to all the destinations is capped (though not necessarily
optimized) etc.

It seems like we could define the shipments as facts, the constraints as
rules and then Jess would match up compatible sets of shipments. However I
am not sure if this is what Jess is meant for or good at.

As I said, I am pretty new to all this, so if Jess is not a good fit then
any advice about where to look, books to read etc. would be very much
appreciated.

Cheers,
Simon.
