I found the problem. I edited the default.vm in the templates/vm - directory and not the one in templates/vm/html. But that one is only used for fallback (if there is no directory for the specified media-type). I knew that, but I opened the wrong file in the editor.

yes I did check the bgcolor of the related <td> (hosting left.vm) in default.vm. And when I change the bgcolor of the table, the color only changes around the links and not the whole left frame (which doesn't really look good). But I could determine (if existing) the class in the css for the left frame.
