Jim There is a setting to allow a list of non proxy hosts - this is documented for JDK 1.4 but I have also tried this for Suns JDK 1.3.1_01 (windows) and this also works. eg.

I seem to remember a discussion about it - but cannot find it right now. Can you get your proxy to recognise your internal sites?
