I'm not sure but the error you were getting looks similar to the ones that happen when you have jaxp.jar in your classpath instead of xerces.jar. Look in your tomcat/lib directory and make sure that the jaxp.jar that comes with tomcat is not there and that a version of xerces.jar is. I don't know if this is it or not but its worth a look.
