That wouldn't do. I/We tried that. But that doesn't un-nest table
optimally. For example, suppose there are two portlets in a page with
a two-column layout. 

When the portlet is asked to render itself, how does it know that it
doesn't have to construct a table for itself as it can readily use the
table setup by the two-column layout?

We are at our wits' end on this. Right now, we are compensating this
by creating a 'super' portlet that looks like many portlet when
rendered, but in fact it is only one. Thus the benefit of Jetspeed is
largely lost.
