You can get the current users access privileges with the call getACL on RunData. This has a hasRole method - it checks whether the user has a role in a group (or the default group otherwise - I think). If you havn't already, it is probably worth looking at the mail archives to see the discussions on how group and role work with Turbine/Jetspeed.
